About Baker Surf

Hey I'm Josiah. I started building boards out of curiosity and love for the objects in 2019 and became obsessed with the process.

Baker Surf is a personal expression of surf design. My aim is to create highly performant works of art and share waves with like souls. I truly love building boards for myself, friends, and perfect strangers. I receive immense joy hearing how a session went and seeing a board show up in waves around the world.

I named this project Baker Surf not after myself (I have a hyphenated last name anyways) but as an homage to my grandparents Harry and Ruth Baker. Harry built Baker Music, a jukebox & cigarette machine business that he ran for 40+ years. Ruth was the owner, operator and woman behind the counter at Recordland, a legendary record store, for the entire 60s, 70s, and 80s. Her nickname was the record lady. I do my best to honor them with every board.

Everything I build, unless for a custom or otherwise noted, is designed, shaped, glassed, sprayed, sanded, and finished entirely by my hands in my shop.

My standard construction uses a US Blanks PU blank, quality epoxy resin, and industry standard plus weight glassing (6+4/6). PU and epoxy construction is widely regarded as one of the strongest and most durable forms of traditional surfboard construction.

This approach favors boards that travel well, last many years, and perform in the heavy wind and water conditions we often have here in Maine. My boards are meant to be surfed often, taken on trips, and used hard over time but still perform and hold up. If you are seeking something different, let me know and we can talk.

Baker Surf is meant to be small.

I am trying to build in a way that allows for slow growth, sustainability and maintaining my values.

I don't need to make and sell hundreds of boards a year, dozens is fine. I price my work so the business can last and I can do this without cutting corners or burning out. I have deep respect for the builders who’ve done this for decades, and my goal is to build something that can quietly join that group.

Thanks for reading. Hope you score.
